Item description

Oil on canvas depicting Bacchanal of Dancing Maidens, dated 1928 and signed by Oscar Larsen (Vienna 1882 - 1972). This group of muses surrounded by nature celebrate the arrival of spring with garlands and flowers. Perfectly reflecting the characteristics of this painter, this was one of the favourite subjects of the Austrian artist who is very good at freezing the moment by capturing it in all its details, which is why he was called a poet-painter in his lifetime. Although greater prominence is given to the main figures, those in the background are just as admirably portrayed even if only hinted at. The frame is contemporary with the painting. Measurements of the canvas 98 x 71 cm, measurements with frame 104 x 87 cm. Oscar Larsen was the son of the painter Carl Christian Larsen. He attended his school of graphic art in Vienna from 1897 until 1901 and again from 1901 to 1909 at the Vienna Academy under Professor Alois Delug. Together with Alfred Buctha and H. Lanzinger, he worked on the decorations of the Municipality of Bozen/Bolzano and worked as a war painter during the First World War. From 1919 he was a member of an association of painters called Vienna Kunstlerhauses and for another association in London where he was a professor of high 'honour' Royal Academy. The painter always preferred to create works related to the Bible and mythology, creating his own style characterised by a rich and vivid imagination and distinctive, well-defined colours.
