Item description

Vase with an original and distinctive shape, blown in a single piece without joints and then shaped by skilled craftsmen. The most difficult operation is to leave the opaline white color inside the vase and to create all the different colors on the outside; to do this, some colored oxides are applied when the opal white vase shape has already come out of the kiln; at the precise moment in which they begin to merge and amalgamate with the white, the craftsman begins the blowing and shaping of the vase, fast and quickly, so that the colors are distributed only on the surface of the object, without penetrating it, as if they were brushstrokes. Afterwards, the vase is put back into the kiln for a very short time and then rapidly cooled down; an operation that not everyone is able to do, in fact it is only delegated to glass masters. The vase was made between 1970 and 1975 by Vetreria Barbieri of Empoli (Florence). This company produced many fine quality stained glass items; he only worked opal glass between 1970 and 1980 but with excellent results as demonstrated by this vase. Often this type of production is mistaken for that made by the Carlo Moretti furnace in Murano. Although the two manufactures are qualitatively equivalent, the provenance of this vase is confirmed by the label of the Barbieri firm which has named these items "Opaline Florence". Those that may appear to be small defects inside or outside the glass (bubbles, lumps, streaks, etc.) are instead evidence of the craftsmanship of the object.
