Item description

A peculiar and refined ashtray made of heart-shaped blown glass. The signature underneath the object tells us that it was produced between 1960 and 1965 by FM Konstglas, a Swedish glassworks based in Ronneby; the technique used is 'submerged glass', a technique first invented in Murano in the late 1930s. The ashtray consists of a layer of glass of varying thickness to which various layers of different colours were heat-impregnated by immersing the glass in crucibles of different colours. At this point, the craftsman moulded the glass mass into the shape of a heart, artistically shading the colours; in addition, he placed a myriad of small infusions of a glass of other colours at the bottom of the heart. Once cooled, the ashtray was polished by hand. The artefact is thus formed of several layers of different thicknesses and colours to create incredible colour effects and decorations within the object itself. In fact, the infusions placed on the bottom produce extraordinary refractions and optical colouring depending on how the light hits them. Sweden is known for its glass and crystal, among the most prestigious in the world. The first Swedish glassworks was founded in 1742 by two generals from the army of Charles XII. Before them, it was in Italy, and more precisely in Venice, that Sweden sourced glass and assimilated the incredible and prestigious workmanship of the Venetian glass masters. The two men therefore founded a small factory that they called Kosta. But since glassblowers were rare in Sweden and it was practically impossible for Venetian glassblowers to remove them from their city, they were forced to resort to Bohemian labour. The Bohemians are therefore the basis of the Swedish glass industry. Today in the south of the country, there is a glass road between Kalmar and Vaxjo, along which one can meet and visit many glassworks, including Kosta Boda; other important and famous Swedish glassworks are Orrefors and Maleras. Measures length 18 cm, width 14 cm, height 7 cm. The ashtray is in good condition. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
