Item description

Pair of burnished bronze and yellow Siena marble, Italy first quarter 19th century. Oval marble plinth base, embellished with shell and beaded friezes in the lower section and a pair of festoons composed of leaves, lake reeds and four valves arranged in a rosette, one of which is partly missing. The upper section of the base has a bronze plaque simulating sea ripples, from which rises a sculpture in the round depicting a winged bichaudate mermaid, characterised by a 'crown' of seaweed and raised arms, the latter holding a large shell with a segmented profile placed on top. One of the bronzes surrounding the plinth is partially missing.
