Item description

Massive ashtray in Murano glass characterized by clean and decisive cuts and very accentuated edges. The color is an exceptional cobalt blue with shades of blue obtained with cobalt oxide and a small amount of copper oxide. The ashtray was created between 1964 and 1968 in a small furnace in Murano managed by former master glassmakers of the Mandruzzato company, who created the ashtray following the company's own style and using the "submerged" glass technique. This was born in Murano in the late 1930s but became popular in the 1950s thanks to the skill and inventiveness of the Murano masters. The "submerged" glass technique, starting from a blown or full glass, allows to obtain several superimposed layers of different colors with suggestive chromatic effects; this is possible by immersing the glass being processed in crucibles of different colours. In this case, therefore, the transparent glass that came out of the oven was placed in a single crucible containing, as already mentioned, cobalt oxide and copper, which gave the glass this beautiful and evocative colour. The operation is not simple and is performed only by highly experienced master glassmakers. After this step, the master glassmaker, with the help of special smooth tools, gave the ashtray a linear and geometric shape which, once cooled down, moved on to the delicate phase of leveling and polishing by hand, operations which allowed the surfaces to be perfectly flattened. , smooth and shiny. The Mandruzzato company is a renowned glass factory based in Murano and is known for its fine glass creations, including ashtrays. These are made using traditional glassblowing techniques perfected over generations in Murano; they are characterized by bright colors, bold geometric patterns, eye-catching color combinations and high-quality workmanship. Each ashtray is a unique work of art, showcasing the skill and creativity of the craftsmen. The artisans of the small Murano furnace have been able to master the techniques and the use of colors with skill, creating an object that creates a beautiful play of light.
