It has two layered pillars as legs and a thick, oval table top. The structure of the base makes clear reference to architecture. Scarpa's way of thinking about architecture is particularly visible in this piece. The 'Samo' dining table, designed in 1971 for Simon Gavina's 'Ultrarazionale' collection, consists of two fluted solid granite pillars and a single floating oval top in white granite. The table explicitly displays strong architectural features in the pillar base. The solid oval granite top is an example of the use of gravity-based techniques, as the weight of the oval top balances perfectly on the pedestal base. Carlo Scarpa was one of the most important and influential architects of the 20th century. He was influenced by the materials, landscape and history of Venetian and Japanese culture. Scarpa translated his interests in history, regionalism, invention and the techniques of the artist and craftsman into ingenious glass and furniture design. Carlo Scarpa was born in Venice in 1906 and lived in the Veneto for most of his life, until his death in 1978. As an architect, he designed works almost exclusively in the Veneto, although his influence and ideas reached all over the world. Scarpa received numerous prizes and honours during his lifetime, including the Diploma of Honour for glass objects at the Milan Triennale (1940), the Olivetti National Prize for Architecture (1956), the IN-ARCH National Prize and the Ministry of Education's gold medal for his work at the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona (1962), the President of the Republic's Prize for Architecture (1967) and an honorary degree in architecture (1978).
