Nordmende used to give its appliances names inspired by famous operas. In this case the choice fell perhaps on the famous opera set to music by Bizet for its liveliness. The Carmen (radio) is in fact a medium-high class device (by Nordmende standards) with a not too solemn appearance and a lively, sparkling sound.
This model is not just any Nordmende Carmen, but a Nordmende Carmen HI-FI. The acronym HI-FI, far from having any pretensions to true high fidelity, identifies a model that is very different from its predecessors, with its own keyboard, filters, output stage etc., which we only find in the few higher models. It is a rather important device, with a classic line and characterised by a good level of performance. A nice woofer with a large Alnico magnet and two side cone tweeters. The cabinet is very nice and highly polished. Nordmende's care and precision in its production is well known. The quality of the components is known especially to German collectors. Suffice it to say that the valves, for those who know what they mean, are all Telefunken and in the models with a counterphase output stage they are even numbered. This unit represents the maximum evolution of the Carmen before the radical and questionable line change of the later models. The sound doesn't quite match that of the Tannhauser, the bass isn't as deep and the treble isn't as crystal clear up front, but the size makes it easier to place in the room.
