Oil on canvas. 17th century French school. The scene, set at night in the garden of a villa, of which the ornate façade can be glimpsed on the right and in which the spouting fountain with putti stands out, under a dark sky further obscured by serious clouds, shows two figures having a conversation: an elderly man dressed modestly is severely admonishing a seated young man, richly dressed, who seems to be making the mea culpa gesture with his hand. The physiognomy and gestures of the two figures, together with the style of their clothing, would seem to refer to the philosopher Aristotle who was called to the Macedonian court to tutor the young Alexander, the future king known as Alexander the Great. According to Plutarch in his "Parallel Lives", the young Alexander was a brilliant pupil, so much so that he was also initiated into the most profound and esoteric Aristotelian doctrines, from which derives the halo of mystery and profound interiority that transpires in the work presented here. The painting has been restored and re-framed. It is presented in a stylish frame.
