Madonna and Child, Flemish oil on panel, first half of the 17th century
Antique Flemish panel painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil-painted work depicting a beautiful Madonna and Child in a niche surrounded by a garland of masterfully painted flowers and fruit. It features a carved symbol on the back of the panel referable to the Guild of St. Luke (lacking authenticity), a guild of artists active in Antwerp during the Baroque period. The composition follows the style of Cornelis Schut (1597-1655), a pupil of Rubens, and both were members of the guild together with the greatest painters of the Golden Age in the Netherlands. 20th century carved, lacquered and gilded wooden frame with some signs of time (see photo). Painting has undergone some minor restoration work, overall in excellent state of preservation. Light painting H 45 x W 59 cm.
