Antique Italian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas, first half of the 17th century, depicting a high quality copy of The Massacre of the Innocents by Jacopo Robusti known as Tintoretto. The work is a mirror image of the master's original in the Scuola di San Rocco in Venice. According to the Gospel story, Herod the Great, King of Judea, ordered the massacre of children with the aim of killing Jesus, of whose birth he had been informed by the Magi who had come from the East. An angel warned Joseph in a dream, ordering him to flee to Egypt and only after Herod's death did he return to Galilee. A work of excellent pictorial quality characterised by great dynamism and a skilful use of chiaroscuro. 20th-century carved and gilded wooden frame, pleasantly decorated, with some signs of time. Painting that has undergone restoration with partial re-staining and restoration of colour in places (see photo). Overall in good state of preservation. Light painting H 112.5 x W 130 cm.
