4 Fledermaus wood and brown leather chairs by Josef Hoffmann for Alivar, 1980s
Four Fledermaus chairs in curved beech with padded seat and brown leather cover with points in relief. Model designed by the great Moravian architect Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) for the performance hall of the 1907 Cabaret Fledermaus. Hence the name by which they are known "Cabaret". The chairs are in excellent condition. The structure is stable and solid and does not break. The leather cover is ok. Minimal signs due to use. The price of the single new chair is 1480 €, the price of the new set is 5900 €. Designed by Josef Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkstatte and listed in the catalogues J. & J. Kohn as model no. 728, the chair was chosen for the Viennese Fledermaus Cabaret, inaugurated in October 1907. For the time, design represented a bold and radical departure from the golden tradition of European nightclubs and immediately gained popularity. The wooden guides and balls on the connection points are typical of J. Hoffmann. They clearly show the influence of the Scotsman Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose work helped shape Hoffmann from 1900: The revival of classicist ideals and the use of simple forms in Hoffmann’s work can be traced back to the forms of the founding master of the Glasgow school.
