Item description

Oil painting on panel by Edward Chappel depicting a landscape, late 19th - early 20th century. Signed. Edward Chappel, also known as Edouard Chappel, was a painter of Belgian-British origin, born on 24 October 1859 in Antwerp, Belgium, and passed away in 1946 in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp with Charles Verlat and continued his education in Paris at the Académie Julian. His art reflected the influence of Flemish and Dutch artistic traditions but, as time passed, Chappel began to experiment with new styles. After moving to London in 1890, Chappel established himself as a renowned landscape and still life painter. His works have been praised for their ability to evoke particular atmospheres, capturing the essence of British natural scenes with a distinctive touch. Throughout his career, he has exhibited his works in various exhibitions which have achieved recognition throughout the UK and abroad. In the last years of his life Chappel moved to the south of France, where he adopted a more impressionistic style, influenced by the brightness and vibrant colors of the region. His works from this period reflect a growing interest in impressionistic depictions of landscape. Chappel's works are held in major museum collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, testifying to his lasting impact on the field of art.
