Item description

Color etching and aquatint by Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren (Santiago de Chile, 1911 – Civitavecchia, 2002), circa 1976. Matta was a Chilean painter and architect. From a wealthy family he graduated in architecture in 1931 from the University of Santiago de Chile. In 1934 he moved to Paris where he collaborated with Le Corbusier (La Chaux-de-Fonds, 1887 – Roccabruna, 1965). With André Breton and Salvator Dalì he joined the Surrealism group, developing his own modus operandi in which often abstract forms created compositions full of imagination. His early works have titles such as Psychological Morphologies or Inscape. He subsequently left for London to work with Walter Gropius (Berlin, 1883 – Boston, 1969) and here he came into contact with Henry Moore (Castleford, 1898 – Much Hadham, 1986) and René Magritte (Lessines, 1898 – Brussels, 1967). During World War II he was in New York. In 1949 he was in Rome, often traveling between France and Italy; in Tarquinia he transformed a convent into the Autoapocalipse, a house built by recycling waste from old cars. Signature in pencil at the bottom right, on the left an example initialed H.C. In the old typewritten slip that is preserved, the work is dated to 1976. It is therefore not present in the catalog raisonné which stops at 1975. The composition, however, is very consistent with the works of that period, both in the forms and in the use of white curved lines. An example is the 1974 work entitled Si non ti tumbo ti maso, cataloged at no. 392. Excellent impression with intense colors printed on France/Arches watermark paper. Uncut sheet. Excellent state of conservation. Bibliography: Roland Sabatier, Matta catalog raisonné de l'oeuvre grave (1943-1974), Ed Sonet, 1975.
