Large Italian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work attributable to a follower of the famous painter Antonio Allegri known as Correggio (1489-1534). A painting of notable pictorial quality as it is a very high quality copy of the Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in the presence of Saint Sebastian, now exhibited at the Louvre in Paris. Of all the versions that Correggio had given of this theme during his artistic career, this is one of the most elegant and refined. Legend has it that, after being baptized, the young woman had a vision of her. The Madonna appeared to her with the baby Jesus on her lap, who put one of her rings on Catherine's finger, making her his wife. The focus of the painting is represented by the hands of the Virgin, the child and Saint Catherine. In fact, all eyes converge towards this emotional fulcrum, including that of San Sebastiano. Note the scene of the martyrdom of the Saint in the background on the left. Antique non-coeval frame in carved and gilded wood, highly decorated, with some gilding lacks (see photos). Work that has been restretched and undergone restoration with replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in excellent state of conservation. Size without frame: 102 x 102 cm.
