Pieter Mulier, Flight into Egypt, oil painting on canvas, 17th century
Fine landscape from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work attributable to Pieter Mulier known as Tempesta (1637-1701); lacking authentication. Born in Holland, he worked mainly in Italy and was famous for his religiously themed landscapes. In fact, the inclusion of a theme, even a pastoral one, was often the pretext for producing magnificent views of the Italian countryside. Here again we find the Flight into Egypt, a Gospel episode in which Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus flee Herod's persecution. Painting of remarkable pictorial quality and full of splendid naturalistic details. Beautifully decorated 19th-century carved and gilded wooden frame with some signs of time. Painting that has been restretched and undergone restoration with frame replacement and color restoration in small spots. Work overall in excellent state of preservation. Measurements without frame: 107 x 123 cm.
