Battle, grisaille oil on canvas, second half of the 17th century
Ancient French battle from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work of extraordinary pictorial quality created through a masterful use of grisaille, a monochrome technique that reproduces volumes, lights and shadows through various shades of grey. The painting depicts a bloody clash between Christian and Turkish cavalry at the gates of a city protected by medieval walls. Splendid runaway horses, unhorsed knights, ax and scimitar blows create a dramatic composition characterized by great dynamism. 19th century frame in carved and silvered wood, with some signs of aging (see photo). Work already restored with relining and replacement of the frame, overall in excellent state of conservation. Painting light H 28.5 x W 38 cm.
