Martyrdom of Four Saints, oil on canvas, 17th century
Large Italian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work attributable to a follower of Antonio Allegri known as Correggio (1489-1534). Painting of an excellent pictorial hand as it is a high quality copy of a fragment of the Martyrdom of Four Saints now in the National Gallery in Parma. In fact, the painting under examination depicts only the right-hand side of the original canvas, which tells of the martyrdom of four young men, sons of the Roman patrician Tertullus: Placidus and Flavia in the foreground and Eutychius and Victorinus in the background. In our painting we see only Flavia being pierced in the breast while an angel in flight holds the palm of martyrdom. In the background we find the decapitated body of one of her brothers. 20th century carved and gilded wooden frame with some signs of time. Work already restored with rintelo, replacement of the frame and repainting in places. Overall in good state of preservation. Light painting H 144 x W 98 cm.
