Oil on canvas. The figure of Mary Magdalene is here represented, as per tradition, with long red hair; with gesture of painful dedication fixed the look on the crucifix, Holding his left hand against his right arm, this in turn folded in a sign of collecting penance. The whole body is rendered with a splendid opposite twist, which has the effect of making the viewer feel the tension of the moment lived by the saint. On its left is the skull, its traditional attribute, and in the background you can see the shape of the cave where it is placed. The body part emerges, thanks to the intense brightness of the arms, connected to the ochre red shades of hair and face, thus also accentuating the erotic character of the scene, recalling the exuberant painting of Rubens, which had great influence on the work of Crespi. This captivating and pleasant figure of the Magdalene follows the widespread trend in the 17th century and 18th century to depict saints with a background of human sensuality, The European Commission has been working on this. The painting, restored and re-painted, is presented in a frame from the end of 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
