Refined painting from the first half of the 19th century. Oil work on canvas depicting the Holy Family with the infant Saint John, of notable pictorial quality. Painting attributable to the Nazarene group, German Romantic painters active in Rome from 1810. They rebelled against academic classicism, aspiring to a renewed art that took the style of fifteenth-century Italian painters as a model. In fact, we find in the composition a severe formal balance and the use of raw color applied with uniform brushstrokes. The Virgin stands out for the chromatic liveliness of her clothes which highlights the milky purity of her complexions. Saint Joseph watches from the sidelines while baby Jesus gently reaches out towards Saint John accompanied by a wonderful lamb. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in excellent state of conservation.
