Madonna and Child, wooden sculpture, 15th century
Rare religious sculpture of the fifteenth century. It works finely carved in the wood depicting the Madonna and Child, of probable central-European origin. Sculpted by a single block, with a separate base that is not coeval, the Virgin is sitting on the throne, with the child on the knees. The front and monumental installation underlines its liturgical and devotional function. The Madonna presents an elongated face with typical features of the French and Lombard Marian representations while the draper of the clothes, with deep and linear folds, refer to an artist still linked to the canons of Romanesque art. The child holds a bird in his hand, probably a dove symbol of the Holy Spirit. Work of extraordinary charm and difficult to find, perfect for enriching collections of sacred art of high era or prestigious environments. The sculpture has lost its original polychrome while the base still maintains traces of the original color. Statue that presents some shortcomings such as the right arm of the Virgin (see photo) and signs of the time, overall in good condition. Sculpture measures h 65 l 28 p 20 cm base h 18 l 35 p 26 cm.
