War scene, Italian oil painting on canvas, 18th century
Imposing Italian painting of the first half of the eighteenth century. Oil work on canvas depicting the battle of Petervaradino, a historic and decisive clash between Christian and Ottoman armies fought during the Austro-Turkish war of 1716. Under the command of the imperial troops there was the feared Prince Eugene of Savoy, a true precursor of modern war. He was one of the best strategists of his time and personally led the attack on enemy camps by forcing them to a ruinous escape. The scene is set with an extraordinary baroque dynamic: on the background files of knights, in flames and cities fortified cities under siege while in the foreground a melee encounted to soldiers and overwhelmed horses gives the composition a strong dramatic sense. Picture attributable to the great Italian painter Pietro Graziani (1662-1731), specialized in battle scenes and views of sieges his works are distinguished by the descriptive wealth and theatricality, which transformed bloody clashes into heroic stories suitable for celebrating the military power of the Habsburgs. (The work is currently not accompanied by Expertise but it is possible to request it upon payment of the related additional costs). Rare painting and monumental dimensions, ideal for enriching large classic and modern representation environments. Scenographic setting of the 19th century in carved and golden wood, with some signs of time. Work already restored with Rintelo, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small points. Overall in good conservative state. Painted light H 120 x L 172 cm.
