Item description

Refined French painting from the 18th century. Oil on canvas depicting a gallant party, a typical genre scene from the Rococo period, set in an aristocratic garden of Arcadian style. Elegantly dressed young ladies and gentlemen are caught in a moment of conversation and leisure. The composition develops according to a theatrical and circular progression, perfectly calibrated on the oval format, with an exquisite balance between figures in the foreground and arboreal wings in the background. The visual fulcrum is the central group where a girl in a white dress listens to a love poem from her suitor. The landscape is rendered with deep green colors and shaded blues which contribute to creating a suspended and slightly melancholic atmosphere, evidently inspired by the paintings of Antoine Watteau. The light is diffused, without strong contrasts, and envelops the figures with an almost silky effect. The drapes are soft, resolved with fluid and light brushstrokes, and the pastel colors dominate the composition. The work, of notable pictorial quality, can be traced back to the circle of Jean Baptiste Pater or Nicolas Lancret, both direct heirs of Antoine Watteau. A painting of great charm and decoration, ideal for prestigious classic or contemporary environments. Spectacular 20th century frame in finely carved and gilded wood, perfectly in line with the rococo taste. Painting that has undergone restoration with application of the canvas on a panel and recovery of color in small dots. It has some surface irregularities with slight lifting of the canvas from the wooden support (see photo), overall in a good state of conservation. Painting light H 89 x W 71 cm.
