Sleeping Venus, oil on canvas, Italian School, 18th century
Oil on canvas. Northern Italian school, 18th century. Venus, asleep, is depicted here with only her torso exposed, one breast exposed, her hair bejeweled, her head resting on a barely discernible pillow, her hand languidly resting on her neck, in a pose that is sensual even in the abandonment of sleep. This depiction of the goddess is based on the same subject created by Guido Reni (1575-1642) and subsequently reworked several times. On the back of the canvas is an inscription attributing it to Giambettino Cignaroli (1706-1770), who similarly portrayed a sleeping Psyche. The painting is presented in a mid-20th-century frame.
