Item description

Elegant Italian tabletop ashtray crafted in polished steel and brass, distinguished by a refined interplay of geometric volumes. The design consists of two square forms, stacked and slightly offset, conceived to interlock harmoniously with one another, resulting in an architectural composition of strong visual impact. The juxtaposition of the warm, luminous brass with the cool, material rigor of steel lends the piece a sculptural and sophisticated presence, fully in line with the finest Italian design from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. The carefully finished and polished surfaces reflect light dynamically, enhancing the purity of the forms and the high quality of the craftsmanship. Although unmarked, the ashtray can be confidently attributed to a high-quality Italian production of the period and relates stylistically to works associated with Romeo Rega and the Roman decorative modern design movement, in which function and aesthetic expression merge into objects conceived to be both utilitarian and decorative. The piece was likely produced between 1965 and 1970 by a workshop specializing in decorative metalwork, active for designers, galleries, or a cultivated bourgeois clientele. Solid, well-proportioned, and visually striking, this ashtray should be regarded as a true design object—a tabletop sculptural piece intended to be appreciated even when not in use. The interlocking square elements create depth, reflections, and subtle plays of light, generating a visual tension characteristic of post-rationalist and modernist Italian design. Thanks to its distinctive character, it can be displayed on a modernist coffee table, a glass or dark wood desk, a brass, steel, or lacquered console, or on a low cabinet within a mid-century modern, modern, postmodern, or Hollywood Regency interior. It is also ideal as a sculptural centerpiece or as a decorative accent in a study, library, or elegant living room, where it can engage in dialogue with fine materials and clean-lined furnishings. Dimensions: 6.7 × 6.7 in; height 1.2 in.
