Item description

Konstantin Stoitzner (Busau, Bohemia 1863 – Vienna 1934) Landscape with mills, oil on panel, signed. An atmospheric landscape with mills, painted in oil on panel by the Austrian artist Konstantin Stoitzner, one of the best-known representatives of late impressionism and atmospheric landscape painting in Austria around 1900. Stoitzner studied under Emil Jakob Schindler and Robert Russ and was an active member of the Künstlerhaus Wien, where he exhibited regularly. The painting is notable for its dramatic treatment of the sky, balanced yet dynamic composition, and strong sense of atmosphere, hallmarks of Stoitzner's most ornate works. The motif of windmills, waterways and open countryside appears frequently in his work and reflects a poetic dialogue between nature and rural life. The painting technique is confident and expressive, with a rich, nuanced color palette and subtle contrasts that bring depth and movement to the scene. Executed in Stoitzner's mature style, the work exemplifies the Austrian tradition of Stimmungslandschaft (atmospheric landscape), combining Impressionist influences with a Romantic sensitivity to light, time and landscape. The expansive sky and low horizon highlight the vastness of the land, while the mills serve as quiet focal points within the composition. This painting represents a strong and authentic example of early 20th century Austrian landscape painting and is particularly suitable for collectors of Central European art and evocative landscape works.
