Italian painting, Christ among the Doctors, 17th century
Splendid religious painting from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting one of the most significant moments of Jesus' childhood, Christ among the doctors in the temple. After getting lost during the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, the young Jesus is found by his parents in the temple while discussing with the doctors of the law, arousing wonder at his precocious wisdom. At the center of the composition Christ emerges with a luminous face while with a measured gesture of the hand he seems to argue with authority. Around him the doctors react with different expressions, amazement, doubt, giving rise to an intense visual dialogue. Painting of good pictorial quality, where the close layout and the strong chiaroscuro recall the Caravaggio tradition of the Neapolitan school. Of particular charm is the variety of characters, among which the figure of the scholar with glasses stands out, a rare detail of everyday realism that accentuates the theatrical character of the scene. A work of great narrative suggestion and expressive intensity, ideal for refined environments, capable of combining spiritual depth and strong visual impact. 20th century frame in gilded wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in some places. Overall in good state of conservation. Light painting H 95.5 x W 131 cm.
