The work is distinguished by an off-center pyramidal composition and a strong sense of movement. In the center, the Virgin is captured in a dynamic gesture, her purple cloak billowing in the wind, as she turns her thoughtful gaze towards the Child. The latter is placed on top of a lamb (symbol of Agnus Dei), with one arm outstretched upwards in a gesture of joyful vitality.
At the foot of the main scene lies Saint John the Baptist, recognizable by the wooden cross on the ground, playing with fruit. In the background, in a protective dim light, the figure of Saint Joseph emerges, who seems to be watching over the scene, indicating the direction of the path. The landscape is characterised by a steep cliff and wind-driven trees, rendered with rapid, frayed brushstrokes typical of eighteenth-century painting.
