This painting depicts Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), Spanish theologian and founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). The saint is portrayed according to his traditional iconography: the characteristic baldness, high forehead, dark beard and black habit typical of the religious order he founded. In the lower right corner, the IHS monogram is clearly visible, surmounted by a cross; it constitutes the trigram of Christ and the official symbol of the Jesuits. The gaze turned to the sky accentuates the spiritual, ascetic and devotional dimension characteristic of religious painting of the Counter-Reformation.
