An extraordinary document of Italian history and popular art, this ancient "cascia" (axle box) is the structural and decorative element that covered the iron axle of an authentic vintage Sicilian cart.
The absolute peculiarity of this piece lies in the original inscription carved in capital letters into the wood, which certifies its paternity and precise geographical origin: "FB MONACA CARMELO POZZALI" (Fabbricò Carmelo Monaca - Pozzallo). It is a precious testimony of the famous construction school of Ragusa (Vallo di Noto), renowned for the stylistic refinement of its shipwrights and blacksmiths.
The artefact admirably blends two artisanal techniques:
The Wrought Iron (The Paladins): The upper part shows a very rich decorative apparatus forged by free hand. The classical iconography of the Puppet Opera comes to life through the profiles of the Paladins of France (characterised by the typical helmets with crest), alternating with facing rampant lions (symbol of strength and nobility), putti and tendril floral motifs.
The Carved Wood: The solid wood supporting base is carved in bas-relief with central rosettes, phytomorphic motifs and winged figures that frame the craftsman's signature.
