Item description

Elegant 18th century painting. Oil work on canvas depicting the allegory of winter, of notable pictorial quality. The composition depicts a bearded elderly man gathered around a monumental bronze brazier, accompanied by a young woman and two children. The scene poetically interprets the theme of Winter, traditionally personified through the figure of old age seeking comfort by the fire. The quality of the pictorial drafting is particularly appreciable, characterized by soft chiaroscuro passages, intense crimson drapery and a refined lighting direction that focuses attention on the central group. We see a young female figure with delicate features, wrapped in a large drapery that creates an evocative theatrical effect. On the left, a child wrapped in a white cloak carefully observes the scene, while a second child is illuminated by the light coming from the brazier. In the centre, the luminous fulcrum of the composition, we find the large golden brazier decorated with masks, supported by splendid zoomorphic legs inspired by classical antiquity. In terms of style, color and compositional structure, the work can be similar to the production of Franz Sebald Unterberger (1706-1776) and the Austro-Venetian figurative culture of the mid-eighteenth century. Unterberger worked between Tyrol, Venice and northern Italy, developing a language that merged Venetian theatricality with Central European sensitivity (the painting is not currently accompanied by expertise, but it is possible to request it upon payment of the relevant additional costs). A painting of great charm and a cultured subject, ideal for prestigious environments, libraries, professional offices and historic homes. Spectacular 20th century frame in gilded wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. Work already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation. Painting light H 138 x W 94 cm.
