Item description

Female portrait executed in oil on panel, inspired by a work by Antoon Van Dyck (1599 -1641) sold at auction in Vienna in 2020. The image probably represents Mary Magdalene, a figure often portrayed by Van Dyck with her gaze turned towards the sky and her hair loose. In this painting, the face appears reversed in a mirror image compared to the original. The work was subjected to microscopic scientific analyzes carried out on the pigments and on the wooden support, which place it at the end of the 18th century (attached report). The expressive intensity and the skilful use of chromatic and luminous effects recall the typical style of Van Dyck, testifying to the creation by one of his followers. The work is presented in a frame dating back to the end of the nineteenth century - early twentieth century.
