As magical as it may seem at first glance, Murano glass is primarily a matter of chemistry. Colour is obtained through the reaction of specific elements that, when added to the glass melt and heated to a certain temperature, produce the brilliant hues found on Murano glass objects. These greenish/yellowish hues, usually found on 1970s Sommerso pieces, were the product of a heated portion of uranium. Although this might seem dangerous at first, there is absolutely no health hazard: the use of uranium in the production of glass and ceramics is quite common and has been for decades. The piece under examination is a triangular ashtray (or bowl) about 20 cm in size that is preserved in excellent condition; it shows only the slight and predictable signs of time for a piece that is almost 50 years old.
