Item description

Iconic glazed ceramic ashtray. The shape was created by pressing in white refractory clay, while the stencil decoration with different motifs. The object underwent a first firing then the blue "crystalline" was applied, at which point the ashtray was fired a second time to fix the crystalline. The "crystalline" is a special enamel in which the vitreous part predominates over all the other components; the "crystalline" can be transparent or colored, the colored ones bring out the engraved surfaces and the bas-reliefs. The ashtray, a model from the Flavia series (see brand imprinted on the bottom) was designed by the ceramist Aldo Londi and made between 1965 and 1968 by the Bitossi company of Montelupo Fiorentino (Tuscany-Italy). The Bitossi family has been present in Montelupo Fiorentino since 1536; the Bitossi were multifaceted artists but mostly dedicated themselves to ceramics; in the early 1900s they proposed an extraordinary stylistic and formal renewal with their production, but it was from the 1950s, under the direction of Aldo Londi, that the evolution in the modern sense became disruptive. Evolution that will continue over the years with the collaboration of important Italian and foreign designers, bringing the Bitossi family to represent Italian excellence in the world. Aldo Londi (1911-2003), painter, sculptor and above all ceramist, who joined Bitossi in 1946, was a man with a strong creative spirit, attentive to changes in market taste, convinced of the uniqueness of the Italian product; he has been the undisputed star of the Bitossi production style for more than fifty years, putting his great artistic skills and his tireless desire to experiment at the service of the company.
