Madonna and Child with Saints, oil painting on canvas, second half of the 16th century
Venetian school oil painting on canvas from the second half of the 16th century depicting the Madonna with Child and Saints. We find Saint Helena with a cross, Saint Catherine with a wheel beside her, Saint Rocco holding a cane and a final figure in the upper left corner who turns his gaze to us, breaking through the fourth wall; this is probably the patron. Between Jesus' hands we recognize the Scapular of the Carmelite order of Venice, a rectangle sewn to laces that is to be held on the chest, used by devotees to the Virgin Mary. The painting has undergone restoration with replacement of the frame and resumption of color in some spots and has been restretched; overall in good state of preservation. It has a beautifully decorated 19th-century frame made of carved, gilded and painted wood, adapted to the painting during the 20th century. Size without frame: 98 x 132 cm.
