Item description

546 table lamp by Gio Ponti for Ugo Pollice, 1940s. Lacquered cast iron base, chromed brass stem, opaline glass light diffuser and lacquered aluminum lampshade. Gio Ponti is an icon of the modernist movement: designer, architect, artist and publisher, he contributed significantly to the world of architecture and design with his extensive work in fine furniture and ceramics, education, office and residential buildings, and more. He was born in 1891 in Milan, Italy. In 1921 he began studying architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. From 1923 to 1930 he was artistic director of the Richard Ginori porcelain factory. In 1927 he opened his first architectural studio, together with Emilio Lancia, and in 1928 he founded Domus magazine, still considered one of the most influential European architecture and design magazines. When his collaboration with Lancia ended, he began working as an architect with engineers Antonio Fornaroli and Eugenio Soncini. It was during this period that Ponti designed many of his most famous buildings, such as the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Rome, the First Montecatini Palace, the Marmont House and Villa Donegani in Bordighera. The best known of his architectural works is the Pirelli Skyscraper, which the designer completed in his hometown in 1956. He continued working into his eighties, completing such impressive works as the Gran Madre di Dio Co-cathedral in Taranto and the Denver Museum of Art. He died in Milan on September 16, 1979. Ponti's architecture and design embody the Italian "dolce vita". Influenced by his early work in ceramics, Ponti takes responsibility for the design of every aspect of his buildings, including interior design, lighting and even what concerns glass elements and silverware. He breaks through boundaries and traditions, choosing an interdisciplinary approach that combines design, art, craftsmanship and architecture.
