Item description

Rare pair of sculptural travertine table lamps designed by Giuliano Cesari for Nucleo, division of Sormani S.p.A., Italy, circa 1971. Rare pair of travertine table lamps attributed to Giuliano Cesari and produced by Nucleo, division of Sormani S.p.A. in the early seventies. Made of solid travertine, these lamps represent an excellent example of the formal research developed in Italian design of the time, where natural stone was worked as a true sculptural material. The cylindrical volume is hollowed out, creating a refined play of full and empty spaces which partially conceals the light source and generates a warm, diffused light. The surfaces retain the natural porosity and color variations typical of travertine, elements that make each example unique. The essential and architectural form recalls the dialogue between Italian modernism and brutalist sensitivity that characterized some of the most interesting productions of Nucleo, a division of Sormani S.p.A. in the early seventies. A decorative pair with a strong scenic presence, ideal for modern, contemporary interiors or collections dedicated to 20th century Italian design. Giuliano Cesari is one of the Italian designers who collaborated with Nucleo, a division of Sormani S.p.A. between the end of the Sixties and the early Seventies, contributing to the development of a lighting collection characterized by strong plastic research on stone materials. Its production is recognizable for: use of solid travertine; essential geometries; excavated volumes; indirect light; dialogue between brutalism and Italian minimalism. Many of his projects are today sought after on the international market precisely because they represent one of the best examples of the use of marble in Italian design of the period. The present lamps were produced by Nucleo, an experimental division of Sormani S.p.A., one of the most significant Italian companies in the panorama of post-war modern furniture. Founded in Arosio, Brianza, Sormani collaborated with some of the most important Italian designers of the 20th century, distinguishing itself for a production oriented towards formal and technological innovation. At the end of the 1960s the company established Nucleo, a division dedicated to design research in the field of lighting and furnishing accessories. More than a simple brand, Nucleo represented a true creative laboratory within the company, in which designers could experiment with new expressive languages and unusual materials for the time, including travertine, marble, chromed metal, plexiglas and resins. The Nucleo production is characterized by a strong sculptural and architectural component, in line with the most advanced trends of Italian design of the early Seventies. The lamps attributed to Giuliano Cesari constitute one of the most representative examples of this research, where natural stone is worked as a plastic material and the illuminating function integrates harmoniously with the sculptural form. Today the objects produced by Nucleo are considered among the most original and refined expressions of Italian design of the period and are present in the collections of numerous galleries and specialized operators at an international level.
