Item description

Oil painting on canvas by Carlo Jacono depicting a male face. Signed at lower right. Milanese artist Carlo Jacono (1929-2000) was an illustrator and painter; his unmistakable style, mastery of execution, prolificity and artistic ability over a career spanning more than 50 years, his ability to lend himself to different genres as well, and his great success with readers and publishers made him one of the masters of Italian illustration and one of the most appreciated and well-known signatures on the national and international illustration scene. He was also known as the "L'uomo del cerchio" ("the man of the circle"), a pseudonym due to the layout of many of his covers of pink, detective, science fiction, Italian, English Swedish, Norwegian and American characters (remember, among many, the covers of the series "Il giallo Mondadori"), or more simply by his surname only, Jacono, by which he signed himself. Beginning in 1970 Jacono also embarked on a painting career, exhibiting in solo shows both in Italy and abroad, preferring a figurative strand of romantic connotation that finds its masterpiece in the series of "The Warriors". They said of that production, "they are apparitions of warriors of other times, which the imagination comes to concretize even in the minute features of the face, and to imagine in the most reckless actions". Probably the painting presented here is also part of such a series: it is the face of a Norse warrior, as can be inferred from the fur headdress that frames the proud and concentrated face in which the icy blue eyes stand out, and from the burnished metal collar engraved with graphic signs that refer to Norse runes; at the middle of the torso, the shoulder straps of the armor can be glimpsed. The painting is presented in a frame. Size without frame: 90 x 80 cm.
