Antique Italian painting from the mid-19th century. Oil-on-canvas work, "in prima tela", depicting a religious subject, the Martyrdom of Saint Andrew, a 19th-century 1-to-1 copy of the masterpiece by Carlo Dolci (1616-1687) now on display at the Pitti Palace in Florence. A painting with a strong visual impact that depicts the moment immediately preceding the crucifixion. In fact, the saint is stripped of his garments while the torturers arrange the wooden poles on which he will be hung. This is because Saint Andrew, according to the hagiographic account, was bound and not nailed to the decussate cross, so as not to resemble Jesus' sacrifice in any way. Meticulous and really well painted details of the work, especially noteworthy is the carefully crafted clothing of the protagonists. Carved, lacquered and gilded wooden frame of beautiful decoration. Canvas showing small color lacks and signs of restoration work (see photo). Painting overall in fair state of preservation. Size without frame: 122 x 99 cm.
