Item description
Untitled lithography by Mauro Reggiani (Nonantola, 1897 – Milan, 1980). Five-color lithography, abstract composition. Signed in pencil lower left and numbered lower right 10/60. Bright colors. Excellent state of conservation, except for the presence of foxing visible on the back. Watermark: C. M. Fabriano. A painter with great technical and compositional skills, Reggiani began his studies at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Modena. In 1920 he enrolled at the Royal Institute of Florence where he met the painter and sculptor Giuseppe Graziosi (Savignano sul Panaro, 1879 – Florence, 1942) who introduced him to the Milanese environment. Here he frequented artists such as Pietro Marussig (Trieste, 1879 – Pavia, 1937) and Achille Funi (Ferrara, 1890 – Appiano Gentile, 1972); the Lombard environment pushed him to move away from a certain academicism in favor of abstract form. Relations with the Galleria del Milione in Milan became increasingly closer; the artists who gravitated there were engaged in abstract research on the geometric module. The canvas became for Reggiani a space in which to gravitate pure, measurable geometric shapes, characterized by bright and bright colours, the latter being a distinctive trait of the author. In 1973 a solo show was dedicated to him at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara and in 1977 in Turin at the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna. In 1965 he won first prize at the Venice Biennale and first prize at the Rome Quadrennial. Bibliography: Mauro Reggiani - l'opera grafica 1934-1980. Centro internazionale della grafica, Venice, 1983.
