Saint Agnes of Montepulciano, oil painting on canvas, 18th century
Refined Roman school painting from the 18th century. Oil on canvas work depicting the holy communion of Saint Agnes of Montepulciano. The Dominican saint was born around 1268 and Catherine of Siena was also devoted to her. The composition appears to be divided into two parts: on the right is the earthly world where Agnes is depicted in Dominican robes immersed in a lush garden; on the left is the otherworldly world with a splendid angel handing her a host, while above sweet cherubs in the clouds observe the scene. At the bottom is a lamb, her iconographic symbol. 20th-century carved and painted wooden frame, highly decorative, with some lacks in the frieze and some signs of time (see photos). Work that has been restretched and undergone restoration with frame replacement and color restoration in some small places, overall in good state of preservation. Size without frame: 95 x 72.5 cm.
