Neapolitan School, The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew, oil on canvas
Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting the martyrdom of St. Bartholomew the Apostle. He was one of the closest disciples to Jesus and has been depicted countless times by great artists because he suffered one of the most brutal tortures among the martyr saints. He was in fact captured and skinned alive because he had brought the word of Christ to distant lands. A painting of the Neapolitan school of great pictorial quality, particularly noticeable in the depiction of the Saint's complexion and the magnificent robes of his executioners. 20th century frame in carved, gilded and painted wood with imitation marble effect, with some signs of time. Work that has undergone restoration with re-staining, replacement of the frame and repainting in places. Overall in good state of preservation. Painted light H 120 x W 86 cm.
