Item description

Great Italian painting of the first half of the seventeenth century. Oil work on canvas, in the first canvas, depicting a splendid portrait of Julius Caesar. The painting in question seems to be inspired by a successful series of portraits of Roman emperors made by Tiziano Vecellio for Duke Federico II Gonzaga and who adorned the walls of the Ducal Palace of Mantua. These portraits had such a success that many painters, including Bernardino Campi, replied to them to face the continuous request of numerous patrons. Since the originals were sold to Charles I of England and then moved on to the king of Spain and went destroyed in the fire of the Alcazar of 1734, it was thanks to the replicas of fields that Titian's works are known to us. Our painting depicts Julius Caesar with the typical symbols of the winner general: a beautifully painted laurel wreath, the purple cloak, a scepter and a particular frieze that represents Caesar's victory over the leader Gallo VercingeTorige with its beheading. It also presents an Iulius Caes Rom-imp-dictor perpetWs writing ". Framework of considerable pictorial quality and difficult to find, for antique dealers and collectors of high era portraits. Wooden frame of the twentieth century in good condition and beautiful decoration. Work that has undergone a restoration intervention with the closure of some tears and consequent application of picks on the back and resumption of color in small points (see photo). patina and good conservative state.
