Item description

Refined Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting the condemnation and martyrdom of the four crowned saints: Claudius, Nicostratus, Castorio and Sinforiano. According to tradition, the four were skilled stonemasons and refused to create pagan sculptures for the Emperor, confessing their Christian faith. On the right we see Emperor Diocletian pronouncing the sentence, pointing to a classical statue of the God Apollo. Two men with their arms tied are brought before him while in the background two other kneeling men are about to be beheaded. In fact, we see the executioner with his sword raised while in the sky a winged putto carries the palm of martyrdom. The protagonists are depicted in historical clothing and the composition is full of wonderful details, note in the foreground a jester sitting on the steps, intent on playing with a sweet little dog. Work attributable to the Bolognese painter Giuliano Dinarelli (1629-1671), favorite pupil of Guido Reni and specialized in religious scenes. (The painting is not currently accompanied by expertise, but it is possible to request one upon payment of the relevant additional costs). Painting with a rare subject, perfect for cultured and demanding collectors, ideal for refined environments and prestigious professional studios. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation.
