Item description

The painting depicts Saint John the Baptist. The figure is characterized by a natural twist and defined musculature, elements that refer to the pictorial tradition of Italian Baroque. The work contains all the main iconographic attributes of the saint: The Lamb: Symbol of Christ's sacrifice, depicted at the bottom right with its gaze turned towards the Baptist. The Cross of reeds: Visible at the bottom left, around which is wrapped a scroll with the legible inscription “ECCE AGNVS DEI” (Behold the Lamb of God). The shell: Held in his left hand, symbol of baptism, used by the saint to draw water. The clothing: The figure is partially covered by a large draped cloak that adds volume to the composition.
