Item description

Refined pair of Chinese sculptures depicting an Emperor and an Empress, finely carved in buffalo bone and presented on special wooden supports. The seated imperial figures are shown in formal court attire with richly detailed robes and distinctive ceremonial headdresses, conveying the dignity and prestige of Qing Dynasty court images. The craftsmanship is particularly notable in the intricate surface carving, from the facial features and clothing to the ornamental details of the throne. The seat backs feature an elaborate dragon openwork decoration, an iconic imperial symbol in Chinese art associated with power, protection and authority. The natural variations in tone of the buffalo bone, along with the darker accents within the carved recesses, create strong depth and visual contrast, enhancing the sculptural richness of the pair. The dark wood stands provide an elegant presentation and complement the overall composition. A striking decorative and collectible pair, ideal for collectors of Asian art and fine interiors. Origin: Formerly in a European private collection; purchased in the 1920s on the antiques market in Vienna (Austria). The object has been in Europe for several decades.
