Item description

Continental Devotional Crucifix, cast in bronze or bronze alloy with a rich, naturally developed dark brown patina and verdigris accents. The Latin cross shape features flared, rounded finials, each with a recessed field inlaid with a colored cabochon (four total: two red, one purple/amethyst, one turquoise/teal), probably Semi-precious stone, unknown... The central relief figure of the crucified Christ is stylized with an expressive and somewhat naive model typical of provincial baroque workshops: elongated proportions, prominent facial features and simplified drapery on the perizonium. Origin: Formerly in a European private collection; purchased in the 1920s on the antiques market in Vienna (Austria). The object has been in Europe for several decades.
