Item description

Rococo portrait of a young woman attributed to the Prussian/Central European school, This fine oil on canvas portrait depicts a young woman in three-quarter profile and represents an excellent example of mid-18th century Rococo portraiture. The model is depicted with a voluminous and powdered hairstyle typical of the era, whose features are delicately modeled through soft gradient transitions. A luminous white silk drapery wraps the shoulders and décolleté, rendered with fluid and confident brushstrokes, while a dark and neutral background enhances the clarity and elegance of the figure. From a stylistic point of view, the painting belongs to the Frederickian rococo tradition of the Prussian/Central European school and shows clear affinities with the works of the circle of Antoine Pesne, court painter of Frederick the Great in Berlin. The harmonious palette, refined modeling of flesh tones and balanced composition reflect the aesthetic ideals of aristocratic portraiture around 1750-1770. The surface has craquelure consistent with age and slight signs of historical wear; the back shows authentic ancient patina, with indications of a possible subsequent patina. Overall, the painting is in good and stable condition for its age, with no obvious major restorations. Unsigned, as is typical for works produced within an artist's circle. This portrait is a solid academic example of Rococo portraiture, suitable for an Old Masters collection, an academic context, or an interior seeking authentic 18th century elegance. Provenance: Private collection, Austria (Vienna)
