Item description

This evocative interior scene depicts a tavern with some characters gathered around a table, intent on conversing and drinking. The composition is based on a warm chiaroscuro, with a concentrated light source modeling the faces and hands against a darker background, creating depth and an intimate atmosphere. The costumes, figure types and narrative character consciously evoke the Dutch and Flemish tradition associated with Golden Age tavern interiors, reinterpreted in a later historicist context. The painting is done in oil on panel and has a charming aged patina consistent with its period, making it particularly suitable for display for decorative purposes. Provenance: Previously belonging to a private European collection; purchased on the antiques market in Vienna (Austria). The object has been found in Europe for several decades.
