Item description

A charming small oil on solid oak panel from the 17th-18th century Flemish School, depicting a tranquil coastal scene of daily maritime life. In the foreground, a group of fishermen in period dress energetically drag their beached sailing vessel towards a modest thatched hut with a smoking fireplace on a wooden pier, while a larger vessel approaches in the choppy sea under a vast cloudy sky with thin streaks of light. The composition is characterized by a subtle nuance of grays and blues, diffused and atmospheric lighting, a realistic depiction of figures, waves and wooden structures, typical characteristics of Flemish marine painting of the 17th and early 18th centuries, when artists specialized in coastal views, fishing activities and calm or rough seas. The intimate format and use of a thick oak board are common for small salon paintings of the period, often made for private collections. Provenance: Formerly in a European private collection; acquired 1920s on the Vienna antiques market (Austria). The object has been in Europe for several decades.
