Item description

The sculpture depicts a joyful, portly scholar or immortal figure standing next to a naturalistically sculpted rock formation. He holds a scroll or staff in his right hand, while his robe is finely engraved with a delicate linear decoration. The expressive facial carving, flowing hair detail, and dynamic posture demonstrate remarkable craftsmanship in keeping with early carving traditions. The material displays a beautiful deep honey patina with darker natural flecks and age-related tonal variations... The surface shows uniform wear consistent with centuries of handling, enhancing its authenticity and tactile appeal. The reverse reveals an organically sculpted rock shape, perhaps serving as a built-in support. The base and overall carving suggest the age and handwork typical of the early pieces. Origin: Formerly in a European private collection; purchased in the 1920s on the antiques market in Vienna (Austria). The object has been in Europe for several decades.
